The Science of Slow-Growth
Natural Proportions (The Anatomy) – A Better Built Bird.
Industrial poultry has been bred for one thing: size at the expense of the bird’s health. We take a different approach. Our Freedom Rangers are raised for a healthy body ratio and growth rate.
By prioritizing a more natural, athletic build, we ensure our birds live an ethical, active life. For the chef, this means a more balanced yield and legs and thighs with a depth of flavor that only comes from a bird that has actually walked the land.
The Visual Difference (The Meat) – Pigment, Fat, and Integrity.
You can see the difference before the bird ever hits the pan. Because our chickens forage on a diverse variety of grasses and clover, they develop a vibrant, golden fat—a direct result of a high-forage diet.
The meat itself is darker and firmer than anything found in a grocery store. This isn’t the ‘white mush’ of industrial poultry; this is meat with culinary integrity. It holds its shape, retains its juices, and offers a texture that reminds you why heritage-style poultry was once the gold standard of the American kitchen.
Regenerative Impact (The Land) – Improving the Soil with Every Move.
Our chickens are our best land managers. The impact of moving the tractors every single day to fresh pasture is visible in the grass itself. Our fields grow so thick and fast that even thistles can’t compete. We see an amazing variety of native grasses returning to the soil—so much so that the horse can’t even keep up with the growth.
When you buy from Mayborn Acres, you aren’t just supporting a farm; you are supporting a closed-loop system that leaves the South Dakota soil better than we found it.
Hand-Processed Transparency – Small-Batch Quality Control.
We believe in being close to the process. Every bird is handled with care. They are handled individually 4 times: 1. new chicks unloaded into the brooder, 2. loaded into crates from the brooder, 3. moved from crates into tractors, 4. loaded into crates for processing. The process of moving the tractors every day also allows daily inspection. They are processed in small batches. We focus on immediate freshness and traditional standards of cleanliness. We aren’t a factory; we are a craft poultry operation.
